The letters H, M, and L refer to 3 levels of protection to prevent over-discharge of your battery.
The default is H(igh) and offers the best protection to ensure your battery is not discharged too deeply, in case it is needed to start a vehicle. However, a fridge set to H may shut down earlier when running from a poor-condition battery, a vehicle whose engine is not running, or when using a long lead.
The M or L settings allow the fridge to continue to run for longer when the battery voltage is lower. The best setting will vary according to your particular setup, so you may need to experiment with this to find the optimal setting.
How to change the fridge 12v battery protection setting (most plastic case fridges):
- Hold the Gear (settings) button on the display until the battery cut-off indicator (H by default) blinks.
- Release the Gear button
- Tap the Gear again to change it to “H” from “M” or “L”.
- Wait for the blinking to stop.

For metal case fridges GH1646 / GH1648, press the Battery Protection button to cycle the levels.
